Course Overview: The high school English 12 program includes organized instruction in reading, literature, written composition, listening, speaking, and use of language through a chronological study of British Literature selections that are deemed “classic” by many readers. These texts illustrate human emotions and interpretations of the world at particular moments in history. Through these readings, you will recognize common emotions, responses and concerns of the larger society and the individual.
Course Goal: to improve our ability to communicate through a variety of reading, writing and speaking exercises; to become familiar with classic British Literature; to read and comprehend literary texts from a variety of time periods; to analyze the relationship between literature and history.
Texts: British Literature. New York: Glencoe/McGraw – Hill, 2002.
Golding, William, Lord of the Flies, New York: Putnam, 1954.
Huxley, Aldous. Brave New World. New York: HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. 1932,
1946.
In addition to the readings required for class work, students are required to read four (4) independent reading selections and complete assignments for these readings.
This class is a swift moving overview of British literature. You are expected to participate and try to accomplish all goals set for the course. I am available before and after school on most days to help students. It is your responsibility to schedule time to see me if extra help is desired or needed.
All school rules apply in my classroom; consult your agenda and/or handbook for details. This includes the cell phone policy!!!

GRADING
I use a straight points system since it seems easier for students to keep track of their grades. Participation is graded on a weekly basis, entered on a monthly basis to the Powerschool grade book, and constitutes a large part of your grade. If you have a question about your grade, I will gladly discuss it with you, BUT NOT during class time. It is important to keep all of your papers so that if there is a dispute, you will have proof of your grade. If you believe there is a mistake in your grade, I cannot make any changes unless you have the graded assignment to show me. Keeping your notebook organized should avoid most grade discrepancies. Your final grade is comprised of everything described above (90%) and the county final exam (10%).
This is an English class. Although you may use all types of language outside of the classroom and read a variety of materials in and out of class, it is imperative, expected, and demanded that you practice Standard English while in my classroom. Foul language will not be tolerated since it is the easiest form of a language to learn. You must practice and demonstrate intellectual conduct through word choice.
Respect the classroom environment since the classroom is borrowed. Leave it as you found it, or better. Thank you for your understanding!
